Unrefined Cane Sugar.
The benefits of sugar applied topically to the skin are endless! For starters, sugar exfoliates the skin in two ways. The first way is the actual physical “scrubbiness“ from the sugar’s texture. The second way is from the sugar’s natural occurring AHAs, such as Glycolic acid, which gently cleanse and exfoliate dead damaged skin cells, preventing acne, blackheads, whiteheads, and skin blemishes. Next, because sugar is a natural humectant, it draws moisture to the skin. Lastly, Sugar is also used to draw out infection. Sugar granules applied to an infection or wound will soak up all the moisture and water that allows the bacteria to thrive, therefore starving the bacteria allowing the wound to heal more quickly. Because of this, sugars are excellent for treating acne.
Unrefined Seed Oils.
Why unrefined? Their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on the skin promote wound healing and repair the skin barrier. They have naturally occurring “Plant Sterols” which strengthen cell membranes, enhance cellular metabolism, boost the immune system of the skin's structure, all causing an increase in the skin's elasticity and moisture retention. Unrefined seed oils are derived naturally from blue and red colorants found in plant extracts such as like blueberries, blackberries, and beets. They possess MEGA antioxidants called Anthrocyanins, which are usually shamelessly removed by mainstream formulators and chemists because of their limited shelf life and high costs. This is also the reason that our Sugar Scrubs will often vary slightly in color, as each batch that is harvested will depict a unique color variation.
Manuka Honey.
We like to refer to New Zealand Manuka Honey as “liquid gold” at MoonShine Sugars™. This spectacular type of honey is an effective anti-inflammatory which makes it beneficial for treating conditions such as acne and eczema while offering antioxidant protection. It has super strong antibacterial properties, naturally containing both hydrogen peroxide and methylglyoxal, which makes it SUPER potent against a variety of bacteria including e.coli as well as MRSA. It promotes wound healing because it recruits the correct type of cells, known as fibroblasts, needed to help wounds heal, providing a moist environment and a protective barrier to speed up healing. Manuka honey may also down-regulate skin-damaging reactive oxygen species (caused by exposure to free radicals), making it beneficial for anti-aging purposes by drawing moisture to the skin.
AND…SPIRITS!
We use the highest quality Spirits like Hendricks Gin, Patron Tequila, and Bourbon. These Spirits are distilled from botanicals such as juniper berries, cinnamon bark, and cassia bark which are loaded with antioxidants! The alcohol content in the Spirits acts as a preservative while also killing bacteria, leaving the skin refreshed and happy.
